Indica vs Sativa: What’s the Difference?

There are two main varieties of cannabis, Indica and Sativa, and each offers a potentially different experience.

CANNABIS INDICA

Typically, cannabis Indica plants are short, bushy plants with wide leaves. Indica plants typically grow faster and often have a higher yield than the sativa variety. Indica plants typically have higher CBD and lower THC Content. Customers report that Indica strains generally provide a sense of deep body relaxation.

CANNABIS SATIVA

Cannabis Sativa plants are the opposite of the Indica strains and grow tall and thin with narrow leaves. Sativa plants are also generally a lighter shade of green than their counterpart, the Indica strain. Sativa strains take longer to grow, mature, and require more light. Sativa plants typically have lower CBD and higher THC Content. Customers report that Sativa strains generally provide a more energized experience.

Understanding the difference between the two is important to finding the right strain for you.

You may have heard or hear the term “Hybrid”. This simply refers the crossbreeding of Sativa and Indica plants into a strain of plants called Hybrid’s. This crossbreeding creates a variety of potential outcomes and experiences for customers.

It is important to note that there is growing opinions that the effects cannabis gives you are likely more attributable to cannabinoids (Link to previous blog) and terpenes, compounds found in the cannabis plant, as opposed to the strains. And while some cannabinoids and terpenes may be found more commonly in an "indica" or a "sativa," none are found exclusively in one consistently enough to say an indica and a sativa will definitively cause specific effects.

Like many things with cannabis, it is not that simple and more research is needed to bring a definitive answer to the question.

Our next blog will explore terpenes and the effects they have on our body and mind.
